Spring break 2010 in Guatemala

Over the 2010 spring break Kimberly Rittner, Kenya Cameron, and myself all traveled to Panajachel. Panajachel is a city that is three hours west of the capital Guatemala City. Panajachel often referred to as Pana, sits a mile high and is very mountainous. Pana is on a lake that is surrounded by three volcano’s and is without a doubt the most beautiful place that I have ever been to.

The point of the trip was to study foreign business outside of the U.S. and also to learn survival Spanish. While we were there we had seven, four hour Spanish classes from 8-12 A.M. There was no pervious Spanish required before the trip. I myself had no Spanish. After class we went out into the culture and just had a lot of fun. We did all sorts of activity from zip lining through mountains, to swimming in hot springs, exploring ancient Mayan caves, and finally the ladies favorite lots of shopping.

The other part of our trip was the business aspect. I found a coffee shop that I loved while I was there and did my project on that. The name of the place was Crossroad Coffee, and it was owned by a man named Mike. I was able to get two hour and half interviews with him concerning his business model and how he started up. Mike also talked a lot about coffee and how he got it for his shop. The interviews were interesting and of course the coffee was the best I have ever had.

My spring break trip to Panajachel was an experience of a life time. It was a 3 credit class that will be offered next spring as well as this summer. There will also be two more study abroad trips this summer one to Mexico and another one to Guatemala. Any students interested should talk to Dr. Davies or Dr. Kirchner in the Reeves school of Business.
