Candlelight Vigil for Haiti

The Candle Light Vigil for Haiti happened Thursday night, January 28 in front of Hensdale Chapel. Despite the cold temperatures, around 100 students showed up and were given a candle stick. Friends stood closely to one another for warmth, and as the One Voice Choir began their first song, the students lit the candles one by one giving a warm glow to everyone’s face.

“We are all brothers and sisters regardless of our beliefs”, said Reverend Mike Safley, vice president of University relations and campus ministries.

Economics anonymous held the event to raise awareness in our community and to raise money to help the agents that are already in Haiti.

In a recent press release, Abhishek Kansakar, the treasurer of Economics Anonymous spoke about the importance of college humanitarian efforts.

“It’s not just about Haiti but doing all you can at the college level for the good of humanity”, said Kansakar.

Safley reminded us that we need to support one another in times like these. The Haiti earthquake has left its capital, Port-au-Prince, in devastation putting the body count around 150,000 on Jan. 23 according to Haiti’s government.

The event is part of a two week long campaign called “Methodist University Haiti Relief Movement” which was spearheaded by Economics Anonymous. Greek Life, SAC, and the International Club also took a great part in raising money for Haiti. Students set up tables in Berns Student Center accepting donations. The fundraiser brought in $1,000 which will be donated to the Red Cross.

Economics Anonymous also participates in philanthropic activities that reach out across the United States. Recently, the organization raised money to support the LIVESTRONG Lance Armstrong Foundation. LIVESTRONG is an organization founded by Lance Armstrong, an Olympic cyclist who survived his battle with prostate cancer. Proceeds from this organization go towards cancer research efforts.
