Lady Monarchs defeat Lady Bishops on day of awareness
On Sat. February 13, the Methodist Lady Monarchs slaughtered the N.C. Wesleyan Lady Bishops during the Pink Zone game. However, later that night, the men’s team was not so lucky.
There were a series of events that led us to the Pink Zone game. All of the funds taken up over the preceding weeks helped with breast cancer research and awareness. Events included t-shirt sales, pep rally performances, and speeches.
On the evening of the Feb. 13, the fund raising was concluded at the game. Before and during the game, there were a number of events for survivors of breast cancer. The most touching event occurred during halftime. Several people and members of the team walked onto the court and formed a pink ribbon in the middle of the floor.
“I thought the game was very successful and symbolic to those who have been through breast cancer and it was a very good way to get people involved with families and their loved ones,” said Bethany Dinger, a sophomore cheerleader said.
The Lady Monarchs defeated the Lady Bishops 70-43.
“The pink zone game was a success and had a great turnout,” said Katelyn Bowman, a sophomore guard for the Lady Monarchs. “It was a great win, and we got it done as a team and my hopes for the rest of the season are to win our last two games and get a home court seed for first round.”
The game went well for the Lady Monarchs, but our guys struggled a little. It didn’t help that the referees didn’t seem to be calling a fair game. This angered some fans and people began to leave at halftime.
Overall, the event was a success. Both teams played well, but the girls were just able to be victorious.
“I thought the event went very well although the weather may have caused some people not to show up. I was very pleased with the campus involvement and I hope more people are on the board next year,” said DeeDee Jarman, head coach for the Lady Monarchs. As for the team’s performance, it was a good win for us, and we need to win at least one more game of the season to get home court advantage. You win some and lose some, but I think it will be a good weekend for our girls at Methodist.”
Pink Zone was a sentimental experience for everyone. There was a moment of silence for those who have suffered from breast cancer. I think it was a great event and it should always be a well kept tradition.
